BuuPass Raises $1.3 Million for Digital Expansion

Kenyan mobility startup BuuPass has raised $1.3 million in a funding round to expand and scale its digital infrastructure for long-distance transportation across East Africa, with a primary focus on Kenya and Uganda.

Co-CEO, Sonia Kabra, stated that the funding would allow BuuPass to invest in growth activities and increase its market share in the region. The startup plans to hire more staff, particularly on the growth side, and technology experts to build scalable systems, with the long-term goal of becoming a pan-African infrastructure for long-distance transportation.


BuuPass founded in 2016 by Sonia Kabra and Wycliffe Omondi with the aim of providing a seamless and convenient online platform for booking bus tickets and related travel services. The startup has since expanded its services to include cab-hailing, tour bookings, and package delivery.

BuuPass has also partnered with various transportation companies to digitise their operations and provide customers with real-time information on bus schedules, ticket availability, and travel routes.


The latest funding round was led by Zephyr Acorn, a US-based venture capital firm, with participation from Global Ventures, Kepple Africa Ventures, and a group of angel investors. BuuPass plans to use the funds to scale up its operations, increase its market share, and expand its range of services.

The startup also aims to enhance its technology infrastructure, improve the customer experience, and provide more value-added services to its clients.
